AfDB okays Sh7.3bn loan for Nairobi sewer system upgrade

Nairobi is set to receive €62.914 million (Sh7.33 billion) loan from African Development Bank (AfDB) to build a 220-kilometre sewerage network and waste treatment plant in Dandora to ease blockage and leakage of waste. AfDB directors announced that the loan would help fund sustainable wastewater services under the second phase of sewerage improvement project dubbed ‘Nairobi Rivers Basin Rehabilitation and Restoration Programme’.About 500,000 people are expected to benefit from the project through rehabilitation and construction of wastewater treatment facilities in Dandora, the sewer network and rehabilitation of 100 toilets in slums.“Delayed and inadequate investments in wastewater management have resulted in poor wastewater services in Nairobi — this project will deliver safe, adequate and reliable sanitation services, reducing health risks and economic burdens,” said Wambui Gichuri, AfDB director of water and sanitation.
