City Hall demolishes upmarket Grand Manor Hotel in Gigiri

City Hall early Thursday morning demolished the multi-billion Grand Manor Hotel in Gigiri, a day after the High Court rejected an application to stop its destruction. The hotel, which in the upmarket area next to the United Nations headquarters, is owned by billionaire businessman Praful Kumar.City Hall had served the businessman with orders to stop the construction of the five-star facility on December 17 last year. But Mr Kumar had sought the court’s protection, saying that he had paid Sh2.7 billion for approvals by the Nairobi County government and that the building was 75 per cent complete. The hotel is the latest in a series of multibillion-shilling buildings demolished by City Hall since July for being on riparian land or having been acquired irregularly. Others include Airgate Mall, formerly Taj Mall, a Shell Petrol Station in Kileleshwa and a shopping complex next to T-Mall along Lang’ata Road in Nairobi
