Fire razes stalls at Nairobi’s Toi market

The fire is reported to have started at about 3am and was still on at 6am. Extent of damage yet to be ascertained as the county government said it will immediately conduct investigations into the latest incident

Traders are counting losses after a fire razed down stalls at Toi market in Kibera, about seven kilometres from Nairobi’s central business district, early Tuesday morning. The fire is reported to have started at about 3am and was still on at 6am, reducing into ashes property worth millions of shillings.Teams from the Kenya Red Cross, Fire Brigade and General Service Unit among other were yet to arrive on ground as at 6:40 am to put out the fire.Ms Bernice Wasike, a trader at the market told the Business Daily that fire started in one of the stalls before spreading fast to others.“We did not salvage anything. Our goods were burned. Personally, I have lost Sh200,000 worth of stock in shoes and other wares I was planning to sell this morning,” she said. The extent of damage is yet to be ascertained as the county government said it will immediately conduct investigations into the latest incident. There have been allegations that land ownership tussles between land grabbers and traders have fuelled the perennial fires in the market. This is the second time in a span of four years that fire is razing the market after the 2014 fire outbreak that destroyed property of unknown value.
