ICT Ministry to Handle All Government ICT Procurements From July
The ministry of ICT will from July 2018 be handling ICT procurements for all government ministries and state corporations.
The ministry of ICT has already completed plans to obtain ICT equipment and services for ministries beginning from the 2018/2019 financial year which kick-starts in July.
The aim of the change is to ensure standardisation of ICT equipment to prevent duplication of ICT projects, resource wastage, non-observance of standards, and exposure to cybercrimes due to the use of unauthorised and illegal software.
All state bodies will now be required to submit their ICT procurement plans to the ministry of ICT for consolidation before buying the products.
Joe Mucheru, Cabinet Secretary ICT said standardising procurement services will reduce the costs used to buy equipment and systems because the government will be better placed to negotiate more cost-friendly deals.
“Procurement of equipment that does not meet standards is not only a drain to public resources but also gives us poor image in the eyes of the public,” he said. “We have already put in place strategies so that the new approach does not cause delays.”
