Jumia turns six with launch of products guarantee
Online retailer Jumia Kenya is celebrating its sixth anniversary in style with a free, 3-month guarantee on products. In a bid to enhance customer confidence in online shopping, the company will take direct responsibility for any unsatisfactory products, and offer customers an immediate replacement or refund.
Speaking at the launch, Jumia Kenya CEO Sam Chappatte remarked that building trust in e-commerce is an ongoing struggle and they want to assure customers that the quality of the products available on Jumia is guaranteed. To cushion themselves, the company has partnered with insurance agencies whose premium is the comfort they can afford to take full responsibility of the quality of products.
But to the vendors, there will be stricter and tighter measures to nip quality concerns. Jumia allows three returns on goods of vendors after which they delist them. They also delist the vendor themselves, something they promise to be tighter as they seek to carry the burden of trust to the customer. In the current scenario, when products are returned on quality issues, the vendors bear the cost but this is changing with this promotion.
The online retailer now has more than 2 million products on the website. They have created more than 20,000 jobs indirectly and have more than 7000 vendors who sell on Jumia.
The product guarantee promotion will be for goods valued above sh1, 500 on the platform. Moreover, fashion and beauty products are exempted from the promotion.
Mr. Chappatte noted “the Jumia Guarantee is a strong signal of our confidence in the quality of products sold on our platform. Customers will benefit from a free 3 month guarantee on the vast majority of products, in addition to existing warranties offered by manufacturers.”
The Guarantee will cover products with manufacturing defects, dead on arrival, counterfeit or wrong items delivered.
In addition, Jumia will continue to offer the free 7-day return policy, allowing customers to return products to Jumia (in a re-saleable, sealed condition).
Chappatte said this is part of efforts to build trust in online shopping, which is supporting the rapid growth of the e-commerce industry in Kenya, currently valued at sh4.3 billion. The company also checks customer concerns as well are use product and vendor ratings to guide the business.
The announcement comes ahead of the “Jumia Anniversary” campaign celebrating 6 years of operations. The campaign will feature over 1.5 million deals for customers at up to 60 per cent off from July 16th till 29th July. Furthermore, more than 80,000 vouchers will be distributed over the two weeks.
