Kenya’s Sugar Industry slumped in January due to closure of some Factories

Kenya produced 46,313 metric tonnes in January 2019 against 62,819 mt in same period last year, a 26 per cent sharp decline, attributed to the closure plants like Mumias Sugar Company.

This has led to an increase of 67 per cent increase in sugar imports at a time when Uganda takes monopoly supplying Kenya with with 6,516t while imports from other parts of the world amounts to 8,911t.

According to data from Sugar Directorate, the country imported 36,674 tonnes of sugar in the month compared to 21,982 tonnes shipped into the country last year.
