Maritime complex to cost Sh333m more on delay

Delays in construction of the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) headquarters in Mombasa will cost taxpayers Sh333 million more, the Senate heard last week. The construction of that 17-storey building, which started in February last year, has delayed following design adjustments by the main contractor bringing its cost to Sh2.15 billion from the initial Sh1.8 billion.Project contractor EPCO Builders redesigned the project upon discovering that part of the site had loose unstable sand. “Piling alone cost Sh128 million, bringing the total diversion submitted to Sh333.1 million,” KMA acting director- general George Macgoye told the Senate Transport Committee. The committee chaired by Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi is investigating claims that the Authority may have undertaken on a project that was ‘non-priority’.

Mr Macgoye, however, defended the rationale behind the complex, saying it is a well thought project.
